Rapid7 Analysis: GitLab CI/CD Regex Integer Overflow (CVE-2026-97229)

Overview On October 12, 2026, GitLab released 19.4.2 , 19.3.5 , and 19.2.8 to fix CVE-2026-97229 , an integer overflow in its CI/CD regular-expression handling. The issue was reported through HackerOne by joaxcar . GitLab assigned it a CVSS score of 10.0 and described possible code execution by an unauthenticated user. The advisory states that CVE-2026-97229 affects GitLab CE and EE from 19.2 before 19.2.8 , 19.3 before 19.3.5 , and 19.4 before 19.4.2 . GitLab says all deployment types are affected unless stated otherwise. GitLab.com was patched before disclosure, and Dedicated customers do not need to act. Rapid7 researchers developed an end-to-end PoC that reliably runs arbitrary commands

Rapid7 Intelligence Wins the 2026 Péter Szőr Award for Outstanding Research

Some awards you're happy to receive, while others make you stop for a moment. Receiving the 2026 Péter Szőr Award this week at Virus Bulletin in Seville for our research, BPFdoor in Telecom Networks: Sleeper Cells in the Backbone , was of the latter kind. Virus Bulletin created the award to honor Péter's life and work, and it recognizes outstanding technical security research: the rigorous, the deep, and the useful – exactly what he was known for himself. And as far as recognitions in our industry go, it's hard to top. I'm extremely proud. What the Pèter Szőr Award means to us I knew Péter, and early in my career, I learned from him. This was back when malware analysis meant staring at assem

CVE-2025-61624: Fortinet Multiple Products Path Traversal Vulnerability

FortiOS, FortiPAM, FortiProxy, and FortiSwitchManager contain a path traversal vulnerability that may allow an authenticated attacker with admin profile and at least read-write permissions to write or delete arbitrary files via specific CLI commands. Required action: Apply mitigations in accordance with vendor instructions, ensuring compliance with CISA’s BOD 26-04 Prioritizing Security Updates Based on Risk (see URL in Notes) guidance and CISA’s “Forensics Triage Requirements” (see URL in Notes). Follow applicable BOD 26-04 guidance for cloud services or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable. Stakeholders are responsible for evaluating each asset's internet exposure and ensuring adherence to BOD 26-04 patching guidelines. Known ransomware use: Unknown

How Multi-Campus Universities can Build a more Connected Security Program

Parts 1 and 2 of this series looked at two pressures facing higher education security teams. First, the threat landscape : universities are dealing with more frequent attacks across complex, distributed environments, while campus-by-campus security can make it harder to share intelligence and coordinate response. Second, the compliance burden: overlapping requirements across FERPA, GLBA, HIPAA, and CMMC make it difficult to establish what data was affected, which reporting obligations apply, and how quickly the institution needs to act. This final part is about what changes when a university system starts treating security as a shared capability rather than a collection of separate campus pr

Private Retrieval Augmented Generation via Random Projection

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) enhances the capabilities of large language models (LLMs) by querying external structured knowledge. However, it can also introduce privacy risks by leaking sensitive information from the retrieval datastore. We propose a simple method to preserve datastore privacy in RAG systems via random projection. By applying the same projection to both datastore embeddings and query embeddings, our method provably preserves semantic similarity between queries and retrieved items while substantially mitigating data extraction attacks. Across multiple RAG architectures and datasets, we show that this lightweight approach achieves superior retrieval and generation performance compared to prior methods which leverage formal differential privacy (DP) guarantees, while exhibiting comparable empirical privacy under strong attack models. Our results for the first time s

ARMORY CASTLE Exploits BeyondTrust

Written by: Jayson Frost, Bryce Greathouse, Brian Meyer, John Palmisano, Rajesh Rajeshirke, Steve Rasch, John Wolfram Introduction On October 15, BeyondTrust disclosed a vulnerability, CVE-2026-102764, impacting BeyondTrust Remote Support (formerly Bomgar) appliances. BeyondTrust Remote Support is an enterprise secure remote access solution that enables IT teams to securely access and troubleshoot remote endpoints. The successful exploitation of this vulnerability results in the arbitrary upload of files. During an incident response engagement, Mandiant identified evidence that ARMORY CASTLE, a suspected PRC-nexus espionage threat actor (formerly tracked as UNC5221 ), exploited this vulnerab

Investigating Ephemeral Supply Chain Tampering

Written by: Tyler McLellan Introduction Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) and Mandiant investigated a software supply chain compromise campaign targeting the update infrastructure belonging to AOMEI Technology between April 2026 and July 2026. The threat actor conducted repeated, short-burst configuration tampering against AOMEI origin servers. Each tampering window remained active for only five to ten minutes before reverting to authentic versions. This is the first time that we have encountered a software supply chain compromise that was implemented with these very short windows, effectively evading traditional point-in-time triage and automated file scanning. The campaign delivered
